Description

History of Anise plant:

Anise was first cultivated in Egypt and the Middle East and was introduced to Europe for its medicinal value. It has been cultivated in Egypt for about 4,000 years. Anise plants grow well in light, fertile, well-drained soil. Seeds should be planted as soon as the soil warms up in the spring. Native to the Egyptians and the eastern Mediterranean, anise grows in southern Europe, southern Russia, the Middle East, North Africa, Pakistan, China, Chile, Mexico, and the United States. Star anise, an unrelated plant, has a similar taste profile. The star anise comes from southern China and Vietnam. The history of Star anise dates back to 100 BC and is harvested from an evergreen tree. This green tree takes at least 15 years to produce seeds. Originally from China and Vietnam, star anise is a star-shaped spice of dried fruit from the evergreen Asian tree (Illicium verum). A common ingredient in Chinese cuisine and it has a delicious flavor similar to that of chocolate.
